all saints church at fulham, in west london, stands at one end of putney bridge and has several claims to fame. on one hand it was where my own great-great-great grandfather and widower henry slemmings (1814-1865) married his second wife amelia hill in 1848. on the other hand it also appears in the classic horror film the omen as the place where the priest (played by former dr who actor patrick troughton) is speared by a lightning rod which falls off the roof during a storm. the horrific scene was recently discussed by mark gatiss in his television history of movie horror. he revealed it was no complex cgi but the simplest of camera tricks. the lighting conductor slid down a wire placed several feet behind patrick troughton who then held an awkward position for a few seconds, as if impaled by it. the present church has a 14th century tower but most of the rest is a victorian re-build of the old medieval building. it stands next to fulham palace, the former home of the bishops of london, and is the last resting place of several of the bishops. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/all_saints_church,_fulham for more information. i attended the sunday service which i found very
in this comprehensive survey of london's catholic churches, dr evinson's inventory lists all 140 churches in the cities of london, westminster and the inner surrounding boroughs. in each case the entries include the foundation of the mission, the building history of the church, the role of the clergy and lay patrons, an architectural description and an account of the church's permanent furnishings. a substantial introduction treats the subject in chronological terms, embracing the period of catholic emancipation followed by the gothic, classical, byzantine and romanesque revivals. post-1945 developments in structure and planning are also explored, followed by a survey of furnishings and artists. this book should appeal to catholic londoners and parish priests, as well as art historians and tourists.
